Made so welcome - Rating 5/5

I spoke mainly to the manager but all the staff made me so welcome. The room was so pleasant and I was able to park each time when I returned to the hotel. The breakfast was very good, seemed to be freshly cooked and just what I needed to set me up for my 2 night stay. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay, thank you.

Quaint Hotel - Rating 3/5

The best thing about the Russell Hotel is its location, close to the centre of Tunbridge Wells. The hotel is obviously in need of interior maintenance. We were assigned a room on the top floor, and without a lift or assistance of an attendant, we had to haul our heavy suitcases up 2 floor levels. The breakfast was hearty and the hotel was kept relatively clean. The bathroom was tiny with a toilet and shower. The wash basin was in the bedroom which dispruptive to fellow travelers who were trying to sleep. The parking lot was full one night which meant having to park on the street and risk getting a parking ticket. Overall, an average hotel.

Dissapointing - Rating 1/5

Obviously the price charged for this hotel is purely on location! The hotel is in a poor condition throughout. The breakfast was extremely poor, rubber overcooked eggs done in some sort of cooker or maybe even microwaved, no fruit option at all, unable to make coffee instant would be a better option to offer, i ended up not eating as this was preferable. Only plus i can say is that it offers parking included in the room rate.

Excellent ocation - Rating 4/5

The hotel is conveniently situated 5 minutes walk from the town centre. The accommodation could do with updating - the décor was a bit dated. I had a single room and although small, it was well appointed with all the facility such as tea and coffee making facility, TV and hairdryer. The property has WiFi which is handy. The staff was very friendly and the receptionist very accommodating to change my mother in law room from 3rd to first floor as she is elderly and there is no lift in the building. Breakfast was very good with cereals, yougurt, juice and cook breakfast on offer.

Tired - Rating 2/5

You would expect more for such a lovely building in the heart of Tunbridge Wells especially for the price. The decor is horrendously tired and dated and does not justify the 3 figure price tag for a night. Much cheaper hotels are much more pleasant to stay in. The staff were friendly, the beds comfy and the breakfast was ok but did not feel it resembled good value for money

family with kids stay- Rating 4/5

room and toilet are generally clean, actually cleaner than expected from a hotel of this age, even though the hotel itself is quick old. Breakfast is included and is more than enough to eat. Staff is nice and helpful. It is a bit of effort to carry luggage up the stairs especially when your room is higher up the floor, but that is expected from an old hotel with no lift. It was very hot in the room as there is no air conditioning, and it so happened our trip was during hottest spell of the year (31C), but again you can't ask more since you can't expect to have air con in an old hotel.Overall, it is above average for the condition and price of the hotel. Parking though is at a premium as there is only a handful of parking spots within the hotel premises.

A friendly, attractive and central hotel - Rating 4/5

Our room, with one double and one single bed, was a good size and nicely decorated. The beds were comfortable. The bathroom, though small, had everything necessary, though the plumbing was rather sluggish. The weather was hot, so the room, which gets the evening sun, became very warm too, but there were plenty of windows to open. This could be a bit noisy, as the room faced the main road as well as having a pleasant view of the Common. The breakfast room and public bar/TV area were also nicely decorated, but we can't comment on the cooked breakfast as we only ate toast and cereal. All the staff were friendly. The location was a brisk ten-minute walk to the station and only five minutes to the shops and restaurants. Altogether, we had a pleasant week, and would stay there again.

Comfortable stay - Rating 5/5

We spent 4 nights here last weekend and had a very pleasant stay. There was a good choice at breakfast, full English was cooked to order. We stayed in the annex which was excellent for our needs as I have an intolerance for dairy and have to take my own alternative milk and margarine so a fridge in the kitchenette was very useful. It is however in a separate building so if its raining take an umbrella or you may get wet! Also there is a small car park - useful as parking can be very difficult in the town. The town centre is just a short walk away if you are looking for something to eat 'The Opera House', a Wetherspoons, is a fascinating place as many of the original features have been preserved. We would happily stay here again.

2 star hotel in walking distance of shopping centre - Rating 3/5

The Russel hotel has mixed reviews. Plus points are central location with parking in Tunbridge Wells. Friendly staff who checked us in and prompt service at breakfast. The hotel is somewhat snappy, our bedroom was large with bathroom ensuite. The bath, basins etc were pink, loo chipped, in need of updating. Ample towels available and kettle with tea and coffee. Thought mattress could be replaced and shared that comment with the hotel staff. So yes it has its downside, but not expensive and centrally located.

Review of booked accommodation- Rating 2/5

I did not stay at the hotel as the room was on the 5th floorno lift and only steep steps a total fire hazard. The room was an attic room which smelt of smoke was not unclean but most unwelcoming. The whole ambience of the hotel was “downtrodden “ Also great parking issuessaid small car park but this was mainly occupied by large white vans ,no street parking all permit holders which the hotel did not provide. All in all an unsatisfactory visit at 8pm on a very cold wet February evening I had to look for alternative accommodation as was attending a funeral the following day.So distressed by the prepaid and booked hotel I could of just turned round and driven home.As booking .com operate a full payment system it was an expensive experience.

A cold night! - Rating 2/5

Our stay at the Russell hotel wasn't terrible by any means. The staff were friendly and check-in was the easiest process I've had at any hotel I've stayed in. However, the room want aesthetically pleasing in the slightest. The throw on the bed was ugly and worn and the room smelt ever so slightly of cigarette smoke and bleach. The extractor fan in the bathroom was so loud it was impossible to go to the toilet in the night without waking my partner up. The room was absolutely FREEZING when we went to sleep. Both my boyfriend and I had to put on three layers each to stop our teeth from chattering in bed. Despite all of this, the hotel is brilliantly located for the town centre, the room was moderately priced and the receptionist was very friendly. I wouldn't stay there again, but there are definitely worse hotels out there.

Response

Good Morning Ms Burns,Thank you very much for your feed back. We are sorry that you had a poor experience in our hotel. We willlook intofan, in the bathroom, it may be developing a problem, if so we will we will attend to it.Regarding cold at night, sadly we didn\\\'t know when you were here to help you.All our rooms have heating and each have their own thermostatic control either on the wall or radiator so that guests can control it as they like. it\\\'s possible the temperaturewas set too low when you checked in. We know the heating system was working normally. We also have additional bedding in the bedroom cupboard if any guests require. All our rooms are non smoking but sadly once in a while some people disregard the rules despite there is a fine.We know all this is no good to you however we thought we let you know. Have a good day.Kind RegardsThe Russell Hotel

This hotel is in a convenient location, only a few minutes'walk from the station. Although it does not have a lift, and its furniture may not be the most modern, it was extremely clean, it has all the facilities you need, and above all it is very comfortable and quiet:I had the best night's sleep in a hotel that I can remember. The breakfast was plentiful, well-cooked and piping hot, with real coffee, and the staff were polite, knowledgeable and kind. Finally, the cost was extremely reasonable. This is a hotel which I can recommend highly.

Great location - Rating 3/5

In the centre. Nice staff.old fashioned and needs to be updated, but I'm not there for the decor. Spotless sheets. Overall was ok. I run a guesthouse myself, and whoever cooked the breakfast ?? It was dreadful. Burned mushrooms and sausages not cooked. I really wouldn't serve it to anyone. But lots of fabulous coffee shops near by, so I was saved.

Weekend bresk - Rating 3/5

Our anniversary weekend break in the Russell wss was let down by by a very poor stocked bar and also expensive. The bar was very uninviting so no wonder there was no customers. The optics were nearly all empty and just 1 brand od of all spirits. Im not sure it was what it says it was on the bottle!! The room 34 was large and clean with 1 double and 1 single bed and a bathroom with shower over bath which was clean. Plumbing in in there though probably needs sorting out toilet never flushed well. Breakfast wss good and plenty of it probably too much. Position to town excellent little stroll and the hotel has its own car park which is a must in Tunbridge Wells.

Central functional accommodation - Rating 4/5

The Russell offers central, functional accommodation at reasonable prices. Our room was clean, comfortable and quiet apart from some traffic noise. Some of the hotel is a little tired and the door handles/dampers need lubricating to avoid unnecessary constant squeaking. Breakfast was certainly adequate but would benefit from some fresh fruit. Staff were all friendly and helpful.

Our stay at the Russell Hotel - Rating 3/5

All in all, we had a good stay although we thought that the hotel is in need of some modernisations and that cleaning the rooms could have been better. What we also would have appreciated was some help with carrying up our luggage from the reception to the rooms through many narrow and steep staircases (there is no lift). Breakfast was good, reception people apart from the luggage issue mentioned friendly and helpful.

Excellent central location - Rating 4/5

Attractive hotel with excellent central location in Tunbridge Wells facing the Common but close to the town centre.Doesn't offer evening meals, but breakfast was well cooked and presented with a good choice. My room was very spacious and well-equipped.Free parking is a major plus in this location, but bear in mind there aren't enough spaces for all guests.

Basic but friendly- Rating 2/5

This was a last minute booking to accommodate an unexpected situation. This is not a hotel but a bed and breakfast. The building is very tired and in need of some TLC and renovation. The room was clean but basic. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very basic, not especially well cooked, hard poached eggs, toast that was like elastic and wouldn't cut and very low budget butter and jams. Scrambled egg was really the only edible thing on the menu. I skipped breakfast after two days. Having said all that, the price of the rooms was very low in comparison to others in the area so you got what you paid for. The staff are the only positive thing about this accommodation. It is extremely well positioned for being central to Tunbridge Wells town centre and rail station.

As a one night stay I found the hotel to be very appropriate and met all the basic needs of the stay. It was lovely to find out that breakfast was also included in the price as this was not specified when booking. This stay was for a wedding and it was great that we was able to still get into the hotel after the party in the early hours and be welcomed and be shown interest to the evening we had had. Bedroom was very clean;however was not too keen on having the sink and mirror outside of the bathroom. All in all a very peaceful and welcoming stay, with a nice breakfast to settle the heads after the night before!

Overnight stay - Rating 3/5

Our room was in the Annexe part of the hotel which is another building a very short walk away from the main part of hotel. It was very clean, bed was comfortable and we had a good nights sleep,décor was a little tired and dated, carpet worn in places. Rather tatty frayed tea towel in the kitchenette. However cooked breakfast was excellent and if a non resident it was very reasonably priced. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. We attended a function in Tunbridge Wells and was only in the room a few hours to get ready and to sleep so served the purpose well as was near our venue. The hotel has a small bar and we had a drink whilst waiting for the taxi to arrive and sat in the front garden. The garden area could have done with a little bit of maintenance but did have nice windows boxes all around hotel. We thought the hotel was nice but could just do with a little bit of TLC in places. The key fob was very long and was lucky I had a handbag big enough lengthwise to hold it. Think a smaller key ring would be better especially if a man had to carry it on him.On the whole it was a comfortable stay. We would say average to good.

Desperately needs to be brought out of the 1980s and into the current century. We were in room 47;the bath panel film is half removed and flapping, and this panel is clearly not cleaned in the recesses, nor have the corners of the floors. The room smelt as though a dog had stayed previous to us?Suggest double glazing for the rooms facing the busy main road.

I stayed at the Russell Hotel on a weekday night following a bank holiday. As it was quiet the hotel upgraded me to triple room at no extra cost meaning that I had a luxuriously large room for one person and very good value indeed for £50. I was lucky to get that rate as normally it's a good deal more expensive than that. The surroundings may have a slightly old fashioned feel about them, but not in negative way, it feels rather homely - the owners comments on the hotel's website give you an accurate picture of what the hotel is like.Everything works well, and the hotel overall is clean, well-maintained and comfortable.I would certainly recommend it and stay there again

I recently stayed one night at the Russel Hotel. I arrived late in the evening to a very professional but friendly male receptionist who was able to book me a punctual taxi for an interview the next day.My stay was delightful. Although my room was a little noisy (located opposite busy road with no double glazed windows) My room was very clean with fresh towels, soap a working tv,good tea and coffee making facilities, WiFi and most importantly a comfortable bed. In the morning I ate a really delicious and wholesome English breakfast. I would say the only negative was not having a proper curtain on the bathroom window so I wasn't sure whether people could see in or not. I would definitely recommend this accommodation as being really good value for money. I Also noted the location was close to local tourist attractions.Next time I bring my husband to Tunbridge Wells I would be sure to stay again at the Russell Hotel

No hot water or heating very noisy floorboards outside room require fixing, very limited parking ,

Response

Dear Guest,Thank you very much for your feedback. We are really sorry that you had very unsatisfactory stay at the Russell Hotel. We will investigate about the floor boards and fix it. Regarding the car park, yes we have limited parking and have first come first serve policy. We know in the town it is good to have some parking but regrettably still not enough. As for the hot water and heating, sadly when you visited our boiler was broken down, although it was 8 yearsold we couldn\'t get parts to repair it.The parts were no longer manufactured! As result we had to replace the boiler which we managed to do as quickly as possible (5 days). When you were visiting we had a backup plan in place for heating, oil heaters in the rooms and for hot water immersion hot water tanks were installed. As often the back up plans don’t operate in full capacity so in this case the hot water ran out much sooner and took much longer to heat up. Most people got hot water sadly not everybody including you.We are glad to say the heating and hot water is fully working and the new boiler has been installed just in time for Christmas. We fully appreciate this doesn’t help you;however we hope this explanation will help you to understand the situation we were in. Thank you very much for your understanding. We wish you Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. The Russell Hotel

Hotel Russell is wonderful local Victorian hotel that is close to the city centre with lots of shopping and restaurants near by.It is not a chain, but a family run hotel where every guest is treated as part of a big family. No problem is too small for their attention, and customer service is very high and friendly. It is the most reasonably priced hotel in Tunbridge Wells close to town and the rooms are a good size.I highly recommend this hotel and will stay there again on my next visit.

Yes, really. If we can book the Russell Hotel it is our first choice. Really close to all the town centre can offer and including Tunbridge Wells Common would be most people's ideal choice. Value for money slices through other choices like butter, talking of which includes a breakfast selection cooked to your choice. Staff are really kind and helpful, plus a real bonus so close to town is parking space. See you again next year !

We booked a twin room for £59 via Booking.com.When we checked in the girl on reception told us that we had to pay another £15 because of a recurring problem they have with Booking.com.She said this often happens. We paid the extra as it was late,If we had more time we would have found another hotel..Overall the hotel is tired, grubby and mainly used by building contractors. The car park was too small and street parking very difficult..We left feeling we'd been ripped off somewhat and as frequent business travellers we will definately be giving this place a wide berth in future..

Response

Dear Guest, Thank you very much for your feed back. We are sorry to hear about your experience at the hotel and we are sure it was not nice feeling. We have made note of the points you made about the condition of the hotel. We are sorry if you feel there was a lack of clarity for the extra charge. The extra £15 charge was because the booking was for a twin room for single occupancy however there were 2 guests checking in. So the hotel charged you for double occupancy hence the extra £15. This extra charge covers cost of laundry, cleaning, breakfast etc for the 2nd guest. We hope you understand that we were not trying to rip you off. As a small business we couldn\\\'t simply ignore the extra cost of having a 2nd guest. Occasionally this happens and we explain to guests to the best of our ability. Regarding the car park, we are in the town centre and have a small car parkwith the policy of first come first serve in place. Regarding the reference to other guests, we welcome guests from all walks of life.We hope this reply helps you.The Russell Hotel

Home from home- Rating 4/5

The Russell Hotel has become my "home from home". I work as a private live -in carer, travelling around the U. K.Caring for various elderly &disabled people. I generally have a day or two between clients, &when I'm in the area The Russell is my place to stay. The rates are very reasonable, the rooms are spotless &all the staff I have encountered are very hospitable &go out of their way to help in any way possible....

Russell Hotel - Rating 3/5

The staff were helpful, the breakfasts OK, but there was something lacking in this hotel. The two chairs in the bedroom were not comfortable, the heating was impossible to control, and the radiator in the very small bathroom was not working. The bedroom left a little to be desired, one of the pictures on the wall was dismal. On the other hand the location was good, and car parking presented no problem in the hotel's car park.I doubt if my wife and Iwould stay there again. We would like something a little more luxurious

Value for Money - Rating 3/5

We stayed at the hotel at short notice. The reception we received was very friendly and helpful. The general decor is a little tired but the room was spacious, spotlessly clean, plenty of tea and coffee etc. The towels plentiful and spotlessly clean and fresh. There were no smells in the hotel. Only a few minutes walk from the busy town centre and good quality restaurants. Parking is limited to early arrival is recommended. Overall excellent value for the cost and is generally underrated. We would stay again.

We chose the hotel as it was close to the theatre, which we were visiting the night of our stay. Room was clean and functional and breakfast was ok. Decor a bit tired but the hotel doesn't claim to be anything it isn't and for us it served its purpose well

one night stay - Rating 3/5

The hotel was in an excellent location to access the town centre and the off street parking was a bonus. Staff were helpful. Rooms were clean but very dated and particularly the bathroom not seen a shower head or tiles like that since 1979! Time for a refurb. The breakfast was included in the price but listed as £8.50 on menu, it was not good for us as we do not eat meat and we ordered items that were not meat and had one fried egg, half a half cooked tomato and a tiny portion of shrivelled up mushrooms, disappointing, particularly when we noticed other guests who ate meat eating plates of a large cooked breakfast at the same price, you could at least have given us two fried eggs as a substitute. At these prices I have had far superior breakfast at similar hotels.

Adequate - Rating 2/5

On the plus side the rooms are a good size and the breakfast is OK.On the downside, the parking is horrendous, for a large hotel the car park holds next to nothing especially if you have a van !! So I had a parking fine !!The prices of the rooms have gone up since my last stay and in my opinion the hotel is not good value for money anymore.

Convenient Location - Rating 4/5

This is my third year running at the Russell Hotel. Ideally located for both the Spa Valley Railway and main line station. Hotel could do with a makeover and all rooms need to have wifi access. I'd like to thank the manager who relocated me to a more suitable and spacious room, with wifi access to allow me to continue my work in private. He always provides a good service whenever his guests require assistance. Breakfast was excellent with a highly efficient service as always, so full praise to the staff where it's due. Will always come here as the rooms are well within my budget and it's one of the best locations in town.

The hotel was very convenient for a wedding we were going to and happy with us arriving back late.My family took 2 rooms, one with double bed and one with singles.A little old - fashioned looking but you gain on space as there was plenty of room to move around and change clothes etc - sometimes short of this in more modern places. The staff were very helpful to us and breakfast was fine.

Over priced - Rating 2/5

Very dated, especially the annex, where we stayed. After negotiating the peculiar door locking system was four flights of stairs to our room, which was tired &sad &needing renovating, particularly the bathroom. Did not use the kitchenette, but light was not working so would have been difficult, as was more of a cupboard. Felt like we were staing in what was once student accomodation. Very limited parking on site &in neighbouring side streets. Breakfast basic, would have been nice to see some fresh fruit &pastries.

Russell Hotel Recommendation - Rating 4/5

If you like crisp ironed sheets and a spotless bathroom together with a convenient location, consider the Russell Hotel. It is just a few minutes walk into town and the railway station. Included is a delicious English breakfast. The staff is friendly and helpful. Slight negatives are the somewhat tired carpeting in the passageways to the rooms and the stairs to the upper rooms if stair climbing is difficult for you.

Perfect. - Rating 5/5

Cannot fault this place at all.Only one observation - in my room (top floor) shower on/off &water-temperature control is combined in one control/dial.So watch out u don't turn it wrong way when still standing under shower, &scald yourself.I managed to scald my upper left breast - but that'll teach me for not applying some simple common sense - my fault !!Next time i'm in a shower that's new to me i will remember to step out first and THEN switch off.But i would deffo stay here again. And easy walking distance from train station.

Very disappointed- Rating 1/5

It is with regret Iam writing this review but feel I have to say something. When we booked and checked in we were aware that we were in the ,annex,, but we didn't know we would be in a completely separate building, and on the second floor to add to that, and in our opinion it reminded us of rented very datedDHSS accommodation. We felt the accommodation was in a very good position and central to everywhere, we probably would book again if we could be assured that we were in the hotel and not the house next door.

Would certainly not have been a smoke barrier in the event of a fire!Poor design of bathroom/toilet/handbasin in bedroom not by toilet. No advice offered on alternate parking when hotel parking full.Waitress at breakfast did not take order properly resulting in wrong items served.Poor cooking of breakfast items:Fried eggs overcooked and rubbery;Scrambled eggs unseasoned and tasteless;Mushrooms burnt!

Tunbridge Wells in not a cheap place to stay. This hotel was available at a reasonable price compared to others, quite central, within walking distance of the places we wanted to visit (about 15 mins walk to Spa valley Railway). The hotel itself was good. Check in and out quick and easy. Breakfast was good, nice food and nice to be able to choose exactly what you like off a list. The room was a little dated but otherwise fine, good bathroom and beds. Traffic was a bit noisy outside but not an issue. One small thing - please put the name of the hotel on both sides of the sign outside, we walked past the hotel without noticing walking up the hill. When we came back down we easily spotted it as the name is written on the sign, but only on that side!

Great situation, the town is literally 5 minutes walk away. This hotel offers great value for money. Highly recommended!

Not good value for money - Rating 2/5

Firstly, let me say the staff were very friendly, polite and helpful. The towels were soft, sheets were clean and the rooms large and quiet.Unfortunately the hotel is in need of an update with a lot of the decor looking tired and shabby. The cleanliness of the room was disappointing, although the surfaces etc were clean there was a thick layer of dust coating the wall which made my party sneeze a lot - unfortunately we noticed there were no boxes of tissues in the room.Breakfast was good, but limited choice for vegetarians, no veggie sausages or hash browns which would have made breakfast much more substantial. The hotel is in a great location for the town centre and it was OK as a bed-for-the-night. But we felt it was overpriced and not good value for money.I visit the town quite often because I have family nearby, but The Russell Hotel will not be a hotel I return to in a hurry.

The warm and friendly receptionists belied the quality of this tired and uncomfortable excuse for a hotel that is on its 'uppers'.The cooked breakfast was simply 'gopping' causing one other guest to remark about 'powdered eggs'.Contrast this with the Great Western in Southsea, Portsmouth for fine quality, a sea view and a cheaper price. Not worthy of further comment.

An overnight trip - Rating 3/5

I booked the hotel as i was visiting my twin premature grandsons in hospital, and when i arrived didnt realise i had been put on the 3rd floor, however, as soon as the receptionist saw me with my stick, she immediately moved my room to the first floor, which i agreed i could manage. The room was actually a triple but it was very comfortable and more than adequate. There was a flat screen tv and a small table and chairs, and in the ajoining bathroom was a bath with a shower over it, and a sink and toilet. The decor could definately do with an update and the bath could do with a complete referb around the edges and seals, but it was servicable so ok. The toilet roll holder was hanging off, which i thought was rather bad, being involved in a job with the public i am aware of things that really SHOULDNT be left for the next guest to find, but there was plenty of roll on the back of the toilet, and the shower had plenty of hot water too. They also leave a small soap and hair/shower wash pouch that are a nice touch. The room itself was nice and you can control the temperature that you want it at so that again was really nice as i needed to turn it up having found that one of the small windows where i was sitting wasnt able to close properly, letting in a very cold draught and lots of road noise in, another item i think should have been addressed before letting a guest use the room, so i had to use a drinks packet folded up to enable the window to be pulled in further to help the situation. Saying that though, there were plenty of drinks sachets and milk etc and a kettle to make hot drinks and even a hairdryer which was a lovely touch and very usefull! The breakfast the next morning was great with exceptional choice and very helpful, friendly and polite staff. Overall i would recommend this hotel and would stay again, as it is well situated, but they just need to be a bit more vigilant with their maintainance levels, and a small amount of extra detail would go a long way.

Very Good Stay - Rating 5/5

We have just returned from Tunbridge Wells where we stayed at The Russell Hotel for 4 nights bed and breakfast rate. I would personally like to thank Helen for being so helpful and accommodating during our stay. My husband is disabled and we drove a long way (from Scotland) for this trip. Helen went out of her way to ensure we were able to park our car easily, even though the car park at the hotel is on a first-come, first-served basis. This hotel does what it says on the tin and provided a fantastic bed and breakfast and a good night's sleep. It is also very conveniently situated on a level walk into the heart of Tunbridge Wells. I cannot praise it more highly and will definitely be staying here when we come down again. Thank you.

Feb 2016 - Rating 4/5

We stayed on the ground floor in the Annex for Sat, Sun and Mon - it was warm, clean and spacious. Excellent shower. Nice firm bed and supportive pillows. 1st night there was some noise from above around midnight - nothing disastrous.Other nights very quiet. Some fantastic Italian restaurants within 5 minutes walk - so that was a bonus. Was working, so skipped breakfast, therefore can't comment. Slight problem may be parking - it's available but you need to be lucky to get a space - we were lucky! All in all I'd definitely stay again - a haven of peace in a busy town.

My stay at the Russell .4th - 7th December.2015.. - Rating 3/5

I am quite a fan of the Russell, having stayed three times in recent years...I like the Annex rooms, and they are certainly spacious and well insulated from sounds in adjoining rooms. I must say though, Room 514 came over as rather "tired~"this time round. It could do with freshening up in decor, the carpet felt tacky and overall lacked the charm of the excellent standard of decoration in the Lounge with its delightful "musical"pictures. But my over-riding impressionj was of being COLD.The radiator heating was not sufficient to keep me comfortably warm and I shivered coming out of the shower to get dried. The small window overlooking the the back was ill-fitting, with a ferocious cold draught coming through, enough to blow the curtains around and the glass rattled in the wind all night. You must please do something about the insulation of this room before the really cold Winter sets in! I put on an extra layer of bedding, but still never felt warm ...Please don't economise with heating so much that customers are driven away! I repeat, I do have loyalty to this hotel and the staff are unfailingly pleasant. ThAT IS A BONUS,so please look to the comforts of room 514, etc., and I shall return!Yours sincerely,Haydn R Lee.

Convenient location and parking drew me to this "hotel".On walking in the front door, the decor was tidy, if not very dated.Upstairs was a different matter however. Our triple room was a good size, however, the 3 single beds wobbled a bit, and shabby best describes the rest of it.It was tolerable for a night, but at £114, I thought it would be a lot better presented.

Nice Hotel - Rating 5/5

We booked a twin room with 2 single beds as our two children 4 &5 would share our beds, and the staff knowing this arranged for a double bed and a single bed to be put in theroom in order for us to be more comfortable and the price remained the same. The room was clean and beds and new towels were changed every day. The breakfast was excellent, and the staff wonderful and very understanding as our son is autistic and was having lots of tantrums and they sympathised and understood his condition, this for us in our priority as our sons condition is our main concern. Pity about one of the guests rude gesture not wanting our son to be near his table at breakfast, claiming that he was noisey, that upset us as a family, but that has nothing to do with the hotel just ignorant people, as if my son is loving and wants to have this condition.

I chose Tunbridge Wells because it is close to three steam railways. The hotel is very close to the main street with plenty of options for eating and drinking. Great location but in need of a refurb.Clean and comfortable. - Rating 2/5

Fantastic location for a stay in Tunbridge Wells. Already being refurbished outside, scaffolding is all around the hotel. Inside is dated, especially the annex where we stayed. From the entrance hall where there are old tired sofas, to a very 1970s bedroom, it felt like a student bedsit. Everywhere was clean, and the bed was comfortable. The chap on reception that I rang was very helpful, the other couple of staff I met not so much. Breakfast was fabulous, but the dining room set up was again very dated, and the member of staff wasn't full of energy, not even enough for a smile. All in all an adequate place for one night.

Ok stay - Rating 3/5

Sadly this was not one of the best hotels we have stayed in. It is a bit tired looking &needs updating although it was good to see the outside was in the process of being decorated. The room was clean &comfortable all we needed for 1 nights stay. Sadly it is the staff who need training. Our welcome was ok but our check out was very cold, we were not asked if everything had been ok, had we enjoyed our stay - nothing not even goodbye. The breakfast was good but sadly the man could not cope on his own when so busy. We were not made welcome, tables not cleared &relayed and when he did go for help the young lady who came to help clearly did not want to be there her attitude was awful. It was such a shame as in a lovely location so close to all amenities we were able to walk everywhere. If changes are made &there is the availability of an evening meal it could be a great small hotel and we would consider re-visiting.

Double room at the very top of the hotel and no help offered with my luggage. Door into room very stiff and had to be slammed to close - felt sorry for neighbours. Room clean and had all I needed except no hooks at all for towels in the bathroom which was a pain. Had to stand on chair to open velux windows as hook provided did not work and found out at 6am that blinds on said windows were transparent once sun up... so much for my lie-in as room awash with daylight. I had put on my booking form and mentioned to reception oncheck-in that a gluten and dairy free option would be appreciated for breakfast, but this had no been communicated to the kitchen. They did have soya milk and I was promised gluten free bead and a gluten free sausage with my breakfast the following day - that sausage arrived mostly raw and inedible. Had I not had a great time catching up with friends the hotel experience would have totally spoilt my 'getaway' weekend. Not value for money.

basic but clean - Rating 4/5

We stayed 3 nights whilst visiting family in Tunbridge Wells in mid June. Unfortunately the exterior was covered in scaffolding because it was being repainted so we were unable to see the best feature of the hotel. However the repainting will improve it. The decor in the rooms was very tired and outdated but the bed was comfortable and linen immaculate. The breakfast was excellent if lacking in imagination. We would definitely stay here again due to the superb location, 5 minutes walk from the main shopping centre and are hoping that the interior is upgraded soon without losing period charm.

Weekend Away - Rating 5/5

Four friends recently stayed the Russell Hotel for a weekend break. We enjoyed our stay very much. The hotel is spotlessly clean and very comfortable but what really impressed us was the friendliness and helpfulness of every member of staff we met. Nothing was too much trouble and everyone was always smiling! The breakfast menu was comprehensive and the food freshly and perfectly cooked to order. The hotel itself is perfectly situated for central Tunbridge Wells and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to visit the town.

Unfortunately overpriced - Rating 2/5

We opted to stay at the Russell Hotel over the Travelodge this weekend expecting a more comfortable stay, however we wish we'd gone for the Travelodge as the Russell Hotel, albeit a fine and basic establishment, was not nearly worth the high price of £95 B&B.The hotel was basic, decor extremely dated and facilities in room very tired. It is desperately in need of a refurb to bring it to a level where in excess of £60/70 could be considered. The room was clean, staff were friendly, just not worth the price paid sadly. We wouldn't return nor recommend.

THE RUSSELL HOTEL TUNBRIDGE WELLS - Rating 1/5

I don't wish to be unkind but this is a hotel in need of some loving care and attention and a complete refurbishment. It looks like it hasn't seen any redecoration in decades. The bathroom was also shabby. The hotel's one redeeming feature is that it is a short walk from the town centre. I work in Germany where I often have to stay in hotels. What I've just paid for this one would buy me a night in a town centre but somewhere clean, airy, modern and comfortable.

Not great night duty service.!!! - Rating 2/5

I'll give you in bullit points!!•Rooms need updating ASAP!•Day manager couldn't be more helpful.•Night manager, arrogant, rude, wouldn't know customer service if it hit him in the face!Yes we understand the 24hour bar is at the discretion, however there's no need to be plain rude. and tell us to vacate to our rooms. Also the night manager does not need to threaten customers of locking them out of the hotel if they do not smoke round the corner of the building at 12am in the morning. Also when a friend asked the night manager to order a taxi (he wasn't booked in at our hotel, but had 2 young children with him) there was no need to bluntly say NO.A tip for the night manager, look at customers when they talk to you. Don't answer while staring at your computer screen. It's plain rudeWill not be returning here again anytime soon.Other than the stay the area is lovely.

Response

Dear Mr Andrew,Thank you very much for your valued feedback, we much appreciated it. You put it very concisely and clearly. We are sorry to hear your experience with our night staff. We are looking into it and will try to improve our customer service. We understand we need to make some improvement in this front. Once again Thank you.Kind RegardsThe Russell Hotel

Good overall, but the bathroom could do with an update - Rating 4/5

The room itself was nice. I had a family-sized room, with a double and a single bed. It was a good size, with a seating area in the bay window. The ceiling was high and the room was big enough for the chandelier not to look out of place. The curtains, carpet and wallpaper looked recently done and the stained glass windows, while not to everyone's taste, were to mine. The only thing that let the room down was the bathroom. While the bedroom was bright and airy, the bathroom felt dark and closed-in. The bathroom suite was a sort of grey-beige and the light fitting reminded me of something my nan used to have. The plumbing of the toilet and taps seemed outdated and were noisy. I was a bit worried about the shower because one of my pet peeves in hotels in rubbish water pressure, but I was pleasantly surprised. The water pressure was fine, there was plenty of hot water and the shower curtain looked new. While the bathroom was adequate, it just didn't match up to the rest of the room.I spoke to three different members of staff and they were all friendly and polite. I asked for a map of the town and the lady at reception pointed out the places I wanted to go. I was able to leave my bag in a locked cupboard for a few hours after checking out.For breakfast I had yoghurt, toast and some options from the cooked menu. I only wanted scrambled egg and a sausage and my plate came out with an impressive mound of scrambled egg cooked how I like it (not too runny). There was also a selection of cereal. Overall, breakfast was nice, but I would have liked the option of some fruit (although I didn't ask, so some might have been available). The hotel was in a very good location, just one road over from the station and the shops. Even though it's on the main road, I didn't hear much traffic noise.

Comfort and convenience all in one! - Rating 4/5

I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. We had a large room with high ceilings and Georgian decor which was beautiful. It was clean and the beds were very comfortable, they even had PG tips with the drinks facilities in the room. Bonus! The breakfast was tasty and there was a good choice, yet simple. The staff were friendly and helpful, letting us leave the car parked at the hotel while we went shopping in town - even though it was passed checkout. The town is literally 5 mins walk away, it was a perfect and central location for everything! The only reason I've not given 5 stars is because the pressure of the shower was a little lacking. The en suite was lovely and the shower hot, just could've done with a little more gusto!Overall a great stay 😄

Great overnighter! - Rating 4/5

I had a very comfortable overnight stay in a large room on the top floor which almost qualified as a suite;double bed area, sofa and coffee table area with TV, ensuite bathroom (quite small). For the price I paid it was excellent value in what is an expensive area, so I was well pleased with its location - and a car park! Bed was spotless with crisp linen (very important!) and breakfast was very good with plenty of choice. There were 59 stairs to my room (so not ideal for the less mobile) and the bathroom was a bit quirky, but there was lots of hot water.Good value for money and I'd go there again.

The decor was old fashioned but the room was comfortable and clean and was fine for the one night as we weren't spending much time in the room.We were very disappointed with the breakfast service. Breakfast was served between 8 and 10 so we headed to the breakfast room around 9.25. The waitress didn't even acknowledge us until 9.45. The breakfast menu offered a full english with a choice of how your egg was cooked and everything else was available to help yourself to. We ordered our hot breakfast however didn't receive anything until 10.20, and there was a 10min gap between our individual plates arriving. We left the breakfast room at 10.45 and had to check out at 11am so had to rush our packing. My boyfriend and I both work in the catering and hospitality industry - we should really not have had to wait as long as we did when everyone is ordering the same meal with a few small differences, especially when you know exactly how many people are going to be ordering. The sausages were undercooked and the menu listed fried bread which we didn't get.

Over priced - Rating 1/5

Friendly staff, but I do think that £75 per night is perhaps a bit high for what you get. Very dated and I waited almost 40 minutes for my breakfast.

In need of TLC - Rating 3/5

Looking for reasonable priced one night accommodation in Tunbridge Wells and decided to go for this Hotel as the location was spot on for access to the center of town and it had parking. As Hotels go, this was a pretty average B&B, the decor throughout was old and shabby. the dining room, sparse and uninviting. Staff were, on the whole pleasant and helpful. My bed room was a double, large and bright room with a very small bathroom that was something out of the 70's, and it looked like that was the last time anything had been decorated! I had poached eggs on toast for breakfast (that was included in the price) and had to send them back (under cooked)cheap nasty bread for toast and horrible tea.Free wifi was a welcome extra. For one night, just for somewhere to sleep it was OK, if overpriced, although I wouldn't want to stay much longer.

Excellent town centre hotel - Rating 5/5

The Russell Hotel is an excellent, value-for-money hotel, just a 3 minute walk from Tunbridge Wells town centre. The room was very clean and tidy, the bed comfortable and the bathroom was fine.I was on the road-side of the hotel, in midweek, yet slept very well;you would not notice the main road at all. But, then, I am from Tunbridge Wells and so was delighted with the spectacular view over the Common from my window!(I think 'Gibraltar cottage' is the one directly opposite). Indeed, Mount Ephraim (the Park Lane of Tunbridge Wells) is opposite;what more can one ask for!?The traditional English breakfast was very good, served to order in a timely manner.Indeed, the staff are very nice at the Russell Hotel;very friendly and professional at what they do.My only, very slight, criticism, is that the bar only sells bottled beers and is not frequented by the patrons. But, then again, there are plenty of bars and restaurants just a few minutes away. There is a Bill's restaurant 2 minutes away, at the other end of Lime Hill Road.Overall, if you require a decent, pleasant and affordable hotel in the middle of Tunbridge Wells, then the Russell Hotel is the place to go. You are a 3 minute walk from the town hall, Monson Road, Calverley Road, etc.I would very happily stay at the Russell Hotel again, and look forward to doing so.

Mr - Rating 4/5

The hotel was generally a good place to stay, and it made you feel relaxed. The breakfast in the morning were both good and set you up for the day ahead. Only little issue was that the towels were not changed by the cleaner, just left there as I had left them when I went out for the day.

Distinctly average - Rating 3/5

If we had not arrived in such a rush (due to bad traffic on the M25)and had to leave for an event virtually straight away, I would have asked to change the room (Number 34), as it was forward facing to the main road and I knew the traffic noise (and as it turned out, every drunken youth/crowd that went past too) would disturb my sleep later.Do not get me wrong though, the room itself was ok and the bed very comfortable.Breakfast was an interesting affair, as the waitress kept ignoring us, even though she'd seen us come in, sit down, eat our cereal and look at her expectantly. It took me to literally stop her and explain we would like to order before we got our cooked breakfast and coffee.I had to explain to the Receptionist, when we checked out, that the main light in the room was more of a 'dark' with 2 bulbs blown and that the shower head needed descaling in order to have been a little more effective. To his credit, we did receive 10% off the charge as a result.

Not what I expected- Rating 1/5

I checked in on the 26th July and checked out on the 27th July.We were given room 50, when we entered the room, the room was nothing like we expected, seen previous picture on the internet.Anyway the room was so horrible I was scared to walk on the carpet, everywhere I looked was horrible, from a hole in the bathroom floor, the wall paint coming off, the carpet, the furniture just horrific. This was the worst stay ever, I am sure you are aware of the condition of this room. To top it up it was so hot, right at the top of the building.I also had an accident when coming down the stairs which I let the receptionist know at check out.I appreciate he only charged me £90 for the room but I honestly wouldn't pay more than nothing for that.I don't like to complain but the whole experience has left me very unhappy, how can you advertise your room on the internet for £99 when clearly that room is not worth that kind of money.

OK for 1 night stay - Rating 3/5

The room allocated was basic but clean. The room was front facing and due to nice weather had to have the windows open but there was a lot of road noise even during the night and therefore did not get a good sleep. Room would benefit from a room fan. Bed mattress was soft. Despite basic features hotel is suitable for a 1 night stay

Good for one night - Rating 3/5

We booked the Russell Hotel as we were only staying one night and it was close to the town centre. The reception staff were very helpful and accommodating and the annexe room stayed in was large. Unfotunately the rooms and hotel itself was not very maintained and our room has peeling wall paper and dirty old carpet. The bathroom was basic but clean and had both a shower cubicle and bath- too bad the suite had not been updated since the 70s! The breakfast was standard issue with choice of cereal, yoghurt, full breakfast and toast. The produce used was basic in quality but given this is a 2 star hotel, you couldn't really expect more. The only real issue with this hotel is that it's carpets are dirty, and I was uncomfortable to let my 3 year walk on the carpet without shoes. I can accept that style of decor and standard of food is something that varies according to price range, but cleanliness and maintenance is something I would expect at any price range. On the plus point they did have a 24-hr bar and free wi-fi.

What can I say? My hotel rating always comes down to the bath and this bath was HUGE. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean and tidy. Staff were helpful and polite. A nice 5 minute walk from the town - downhill into town so coming back takes a bit longer! Set back from the main road so not much traffic noise even with the windows open. Not a fancy Hotel but it is clean and comfortable. All in all a good stay.

never again!!! - Rating 1/5

The fun(?) started when we were unsure if we could drive down the one way street the wrong way to the car park which was rather small for the size of hotel. The male receptionist was friendly unlike the female the following am who barely spoke. The triple room we booked was extremely tired, wallpaper peeling off, towel rail hanging off and generally very run down and in need of modernisation. The socket for the kettle had been covered over and so had to place it on the coffee table on the other side of the room where the other socket was, health and safety wake up call ! although we had no small children the windows opened very wide and although good for fresh air, very easy to fall out of! again, health and safety !!! the net curtains didn't cover the windows either.Bed linen and towels were very clean though the rest looked very dingy including the very dark and uninviting shower. I risked taking a shower but was not happy touching the shower head for fear of catching something nasty !The traffic noise outside was constant and went on well into the night though I guess that is to be expected in town. Not surprisingly we didn't sleep well.Breakfast was quite the worst I have experienced in all my years staying in hotels. The buffet consisted of cereal, juice and yoghurt, none of which was even kept in a cold cabinet. No fresh fruit, no bread rolls, croissants or indeed anything that looked appetising. The coffee was so disgusting we couldn't drink it and we played safe by not ordering any cooked food. The waitress seemed very miserable too, unsurprisingly!!We definitely would never consider staying in the Russell hotel ever again and advise everyone else not to bother either. Once it must have been very grand but this place needs a complete refurb.

Exactly what I was expecting for a low price, simple small room, stairs etc, which was very clean and comfortable and free cooked to order breakfast was quite good considering other hotels for this price only give you cereal and breads, but if you want something fancy the town is not far away and is full of cafes.Free parking in an area that is hard to find anywhere to put your car was great and the free wifi which is always a plus when travelling was great. The customer service went beyond expectation! Very very accommodating staff!I shall be returning if ever in the area again.

1 night stay for local wedding - Rating 2/5

Our welcome on arrival was very nice, the young man in reception ensured we had all the information we needed. however, the room (in the annexe) was a bit on the "tired"side, very old decor and staircase smelled a bit musty. Perfectly ok bed though, and ample space in the room &bathroom. arriving at breakfast the following morning, we had the feeling we weren't expected, as teh lady serving was a bit abrupt and "grumpy". "What do you want2 wasn't what we'd expected to hear... No serviettes or spoons supplied on the table, so we had to fend for ourselves. The breakfast itself was passable I guess, but only just;the fruit juice was warm, the coffee luke warm and very weak, and the bacon seriously dry and over cooked. Over all we dind't mind all of this too much, but I can't really give a rating of any higher than 2 - and the start system below doesn't work, so there you have it... Kind regards, Pia

But all tables were dirty when arriving down to breakfast with no other customers around. After being sat down for no longer than 10seconds some gentleman asks you for a food order before you manage to even look at a menu. Also kids! Being woken every morning by kids running up and down the corridors is not fun.As for the attitude of the reception older lady, she could maybe learn some customer service.Asking how the customers day is or just asking what they are up to on the stay would be good.I will never stay within this hotel again or recommend it to anyone else.

Never to return - Rating 1/5

This hotel was incredibly shabby, old fashioned and very overpriced considering what you get for your money. For £80 for a double room in annexe we expected something of at least average quality;especially when the words luxurious and luxury were used in the description. What with the funny smell, grubby stairwells, tatty decoration and cell like bathroom...not good. Sheets and towels were clean so a bit of a bonus! Stains on walls and ceiling - yuck...toilet not keen on flushing. Hoping breakfast would pull it all back...but no! very poor quality - e.g. cheap and uncooked sausage, broken tea pot with weak tea just to name a few. Having worked in hotels for years there is really no excuse for such poor quality. We will definitely not be returning.

February 2014 - Rating 4/5

Very enjoyable stay. Receptionist very helpful and friendly and we were offered a choice of rooms which we could view first. We chose a room in the annex as it was like a self contained flat. Although the hotel is a little dated the standard of cleanliness was very high. We were also told of alternative free parking if the car park was full. The breakfast was superb and served by very helpful staff. The hotel is in a very convenient place for access to shops and restaurants. All in all a very enjoyable stay

Welcomed back! - Rating 5/5

Having stayed at the Russell before I was pleased to be recongised and welcomed back. I was booked into the annexe - the next building down the road. The romm was, well, roomy, very comfortable with a small kitchen, huge bathroom and the biggest bath I've ever seen in a hotel. The breakfast was up to its usual standard with a good choice and a peaceful atmosphere in the well-lit and sunny dining room. But guys - I know it was early on a Sunday morning, but how about a smile with my breakfast? On the whole though, excellent value for the price and a highly recommended place to stay. I'll be back.

Single night - Rating 2/5

The room was pleasant enough and very spacious. I was surprised there were no blinds on the bathroom windows but that bothered me less than it might a woman. The shower fitting was poor.Although I could connect to the wifi it did not give me internet access and this seems to be a known issue. For breakfast my poached egg was not cooked properly and the sausage was either not cooked or very poor quality. Service from all staff was very good. The price was good.

Good Site - Rating 4/5

We enjoyed our stay at your hotel very much thank you. It is conveniently located for the shops, pubs and restaurants.A slight criticism in that the post code sends a sat nav to the tiny road the wrong side of the hotel from the car park. Directions to the car park would save some grief in having to negotiate the one way system, trying to guess which road to follow to save having to go around in circles! It would be useful also, when staying in the annexe, to let folks know not to take their luggage to Reception first, omly to have to take it all back they way they came! Very enjoyable breakfast.

Poor establishment - Rating 2/5

This was the second visit to this hotel, the previous one being about 5 years ago. Little has changed. It needs substantial improvement from it's run down state. Even for it's supposedly 2* AA rating it is poor. Take the shower in our room. The shower head spread water all over the place and the valve that controlled the flow level activated the temperature control so that turning it one way produced freezing cold water and the other way scaldingly hot water - very dangerous. Another example was the radiators were uncontrollable with the bathroom very hot and the bedroom cool. The decor was very tired and badly needs re-decoration everywhere.I could go on about other matters. On a positive the breakfast was good and cheerfully served

I don't know about you, but when I stay at a hotel I want a comfortable room with a decent shower. This is precisely what you get there. The breakfast was first rate and filling. I will book The Russell Hotel if I ever have to stay in Tunbridge Wells again. If you want to spend a ton of money elsewhere you will be wasting it and good luck to you.

Not worth the price - Rating 2/5

Stayed at this hotel for a wedding in Tunbridge Wells. Arrived on the friday night to a very small carpark that was full so had to park on the street (double yellows but apparently all of the streets are). Checked into our room which was an annex down the street, no offer to help with our bags. The room was large with a small separate kitchen and bathroom and bathroom. Furnishings were extremely dated, very seventies. The room had a odd unpleasant smell that almost smelled like old cigarettes but as its a non-smoking hotel that was dismissed very quickly. The bed was large and very comfortable though which was a relief. The bathroom was a wierd olive green colour and the toilet a very week flush where is wouldnt even take tissue paper!Breakfast was a let down. I ordered poached egg on toast (one egg on one slice) and upon cutting into it was almost completely raw. White water pouring out of it. Left the hotel to find a parking ticket on my car thanks to the double yellows (my fault i know for not wanting to park a mile away).Breakfast on the second morning was better as i opted for a full english. Had a pot of tea but the milk was completely off and the gent serving us argued for around ten minutes that it wasnt! Another family had complained about the same issue half an hour before and it hadnt been changed. There are a couple of good points, slept well and clean room is about it.Still pretty annoyed about the car park ticket too.

Positives:has car park but small one, Breakfast was okay but not great.Staff were pleasant. Bar was open even at 2300 for lodgers which was good.Negatives:Lot of noise from the main road. I had to keep the windows open as the radiator was boiling hot and I tried my best to lower the heat but could not. I did not bother to report to the staff as I checked in quite late and I wanted to hit the bed soon.2. The shower was little dingy. The hot water again was so hot that I almost got scalded when I jumped in to the shower.Overall I thought it was not worth your money. I have taken to staying at the Russell Hotel whenever I am visiting family in Tunbridge Wells. Apart from the very convenient location, I rather like it's faded elegance. There is no doubt that the hotel can do with more refurbishment, but the beds are very comfortable and the breakfast fills a good size hole.I have no complaints. They are quick to deal with any problems and the staff are very friendly. It is only 2 star, so don't expect 3 star luxury.I will continue to use the hotel whilst family commitments bring me south to Kent.

I needed a base for the weekend while I visited friends and attended a conferenrce in Tunbirdge Wells. The Russell Hotel met my needs comfortably. It's a basic hotel but perfectly adequate:the room was basic but warm and the bed soft. The breakfast was very good and the staff attentive, friendly and welcoming.I brought a few friends back to the bar after the conference on Saturday and they were made to feel welcome as well.I can recommend the Russell Hotel. Little kitchenette a bonus too!Slept brilliantly as even though I stayed on Friday and Saturday nights, my room was in a very quiet spot.Breakfast on both days was great - done to order and cooked very well, and the staff were very pleasant. The hotel is in a great location - handy for all the shops and restaurants.I thoroughly enjoyed my two nights here and will stay again next time I'm in the area. Thanks for making my stay so enjoyable :)Graham

A night at The Russell Hotel - Rating 4/5

Very neat and tidy room with lovely views, 5th floor was lovely apart from carring luggage up so many stairs but lovely receptionist came to help without even being asked, when departing the man cleaning rooms saw me with my luggage but didnt ask if he could help, ok health and safety and not his job I suppose but would have been nice if he had asked even if it was the small bags.Breakfst nice, got the toast and coffee order wrong but hey I didnt say anything as it was hot and nice tea so who cares. I love poached eggs but seldom ask for them as they nearly always come overcooked or too much vinegar in the water. The ones at your hotel were absolutely perfect and the attentiveness of the waiter was a delight, there but not in your face, lovely.Definetly would stay again and despite the stairs would probably like the same room No 52 as it was lovely.

I spent a month in Tunbridge Wells one week - Rating 1/5

I was not at all impressed with the room I was given as it was so small, you couldn't even open the toilet door without moving the bed. The decor was old, cheap and the furniture was falling apart, the drawers, the hot tap spun around when you tried to turn it on. But the thing that I disliked the most was that my sheets were not changed all week and that also went for clean towels. The breakfast was good but I would suggest that if they wish to continue in the hotel trade they spend some money on the bedrooms and clean linen and towels should be mandatory not a luxury. I would not stay there again.

Not very powerful. The bed and pillows were so comfy.Tea &coffee in room.I did not hear any noise from other guests. Just a few passers by outside.. Breakfast we chose an english fry up.. All hot. You can also eat cereal, yogurts. Orange,Apple juice laid out on the table. You have to check out at 11am We asked if we could leave the car in the car park while we looked around the shops.. Answer was YES..The shops are very close by with an array of shops to look in. I would stay here again if i needed to be in this area..

Not too bad - Rating 4/5

We stayed in the annexe room 512 for one night in mid September. The room was spacious but decor, some furniture and curtains were dated, bed was large and comfortable although springs made noises when getting into bed. Linen was fresh and spare blankets, pillows were available in the cupboard. The bathroom had a grey 4 piece suite, shower casing was old and the water pressure was very poor. The light fitment was hanging out of the ceiling. The kitchenette had a small sink, a toaster and microwave which were antiquated, a fairly new kettle and a fridge. There was cutlery cups, bowls and plates. Washing up liquid and tea towel so could get by. The room overlooked flats at the rear and the side road to hotel from the other window. It was quiet and not noisy. Trying to park was a nighmare, we arrived at 8.30pm and all surrounding roads were full, including single lines where cars need to be moved by 8am, we saw the traffic wardens out issuing tickets after this time. The manager moved his car for us and we parked off road right outside the front door to the annexe and could see the car from the window, so that was a nice gesture. There is an LG big screen tv in the room, trouser press, iron and fixed ironing board also very old, good dressing table area with chair and a brown 2 seater sofa. You have to leave the main hotel to walk round to the annexe. Hotel car park is small and was always full. Breakfast had a good selection although service was very slow and we had to ask to gee them up. The usuals cereal, juice and full English available. All in all a reasonable stay but personally we thought it was expensive for one night and accommodation really does need updating. The best thing was the quietness of the room location.

Hotel experience - Rating 5/5

It was a surprise to find a hotel in the area to offer so much at a very reasonable cost. Unusually large room with facilities and a bathroom with bath and shower. The staff were very polite and helpful. I had an excellent cooked breakfast and I was discretely attended for anything I would want. It was reassuring to realise that you get all that was described in the service advertisement. Overall very satisfied!

We were a bridal party and The Russel Hotel could not be more accomodating for us.The rooms were big and we had people coming and going but they were so helpful nothing was a no it was always no problem. The only thing I think I would have to say is the size of the car park, needs to be bigger.other than that thank you for all your help.

Friendly close to town centre - Rating 4/5

The things I ask for in a hotel are:A clean room, a good night's sleep, friendly, helpful staff and to be close to places I might want to visit. The Russell provided all of these at a reasonable price. My room was large, light and high ceilinged and the breakfast good (though the coffee was a bit weak and flavourless) . Don't expect a chain hotel where all rooms are the same the decoration in this one is a little tired but it is great value for money.

good hotel ! - Rating 5/5

we are satisfied, we spent one night in the annexe room number 513. The room was clean, lovely bathroom, good bed and confortable, little confortable living room. It was quiet and calm, except on Saturday night, it was noisy in the street but i think it is everywhere in England. The breakfast was good, staff very friendly, a private car park, the hotel is near the town centre, and the railway station to go to London ! I think for 2 stars, it is a good price, good hotel we were happy.Just change some furniture...but it is ok !

I have to admit that I didn't spend a great deal of time in the hotel, but i can say that for the most part the cleanliness was of a good standard. Although my room (no.38), was of very low quality- bed very uncomfortable, lighting and general condition of shower areas very poor. Just glad I hadn't intended on spending much time on my room.

The staff at this hotel are very friendly and we were made to feel most welcome. The location of the hotel is excellent if you want to be close to the shops and restaurants. The decor is very tired indeed, there's no air conditioning, and the coffee at breakfast was instant - that really is a step too far in the 21st century. That's the reason I can't give it any more stars than 2. Shame, because they have a very good team there.

Stay here - you won't regret it. - Rating 4/5

Location:- 5*.Only the lightest sleepers would find the road outside a nuisance - I had all the windows open and slept like a log both nights.Accommodation:- 3*Enough faded elegance and charm to let you think you're staying far beyond your budget.Staff:- 5*Friendly and courteous.Room:- 4*Huge, clean. The decor. is a bit 'mend and make do' (old kettle base still screwed onto shelf despite having a new kettle on-the-go)more than enough for 2 persons tea/coffee supplied - thank.Ammenaties 4*.Ash-bin by entrance supplied for guests use needed emptying. also it is a bit exposed - taking my coffee out at 2am to have a late cigar I thought I rather lowered the tone - I'm sure the other guest would prefer not to be so greeted!Breakfast 4*Full English better than most - excellent bacon and black pudding - everything else good except for the sausage! I looked at mine but didn't fancy it - I'd rather have no sausage than a breakfast-standard one. It wasprobably just as good as any other breakfast-standard sausage, but that's the problem.Overall 4*I'd stay here again anytime and definitely recommend it to all my friends. I had a grand time and have absolutely no complaints. If your life revolves around the quality of a sausage then stay at home, if not you'll enjoy staying at the Russel as much as I did.You won't regret it!

The Russell Hotel - Rating 4/5

The general condition of the hotel outside was disappointing and this was matched by the very tired decorations to the inside public rooms and bedroom.Although we were maded welcome by the staff we felt that for Tunridge Wells it was inferior. Our breakfast was adequate although presented badly and the drinks both hot and cold poor.Having paid £90 for B &B,I would not recommend the hotel to friends.

An amusing experience - Rating 3/5

We found the staff friendly and helpful in a very Fawlty Towers way. Our very pleasant breakfast waiter clearly needs training in multi-tasking as he could have made his job so much easier clearing tables on return trips to the kitchen rather than every table being full of dirty crockery. The disorganization certainly broke the ice with the guests who all watched flabberghasted as our very substantial cooked breakfasts arrived only when the the first person to get theirs had finished. With a little training your extremely pleasant waiter who never actually stopped could be efficient and cease to make the guest believe they are part of a comedy sketch. Some fresh fruit and Danish pastries would have been nice too. After our hike up Kilamanjaroo to our room we felt it was clean and comfortable but as with the rest of the hotel in need of a complete revamp. As we mentioned to the receptionist the lavatory needed some attention, probably needing a new valve. Revamped I believe you could justify the cost as it is certainly a beautiful building in a prime position and all the negatives could be easily rectified.

Tunbridge Wells - Rating 3/5

Better described as boarding house rather than a hotel. The annexe is a large end terraced house next door to the original hotel. The room was clean but tired and the shower didn't work. Its plus point is its location close to the high street. On site car parking is limited and full of builders vans overnight.

Conditions - Rating 1/5

The staff were wonderful. This hotel is the worst hotel that my wife and I have stayed in.The room didn't look like it had been decorated for 10 - 20 years. In the bathroom, the shelf over the washbasin was falling off the wall and things kept rolling off on to the floor, the flushing handle of the cisterm became detached from the mechanism inside and I had to take the top off and reconnect it.The television was very dim and should have been replaced 2 or 3 years ago. The room hadn't been hooveredbefore or during our stay. The beds were very comfortable and the linen was clean and fresh. We asked another couple on the table next to us and they said that their room was also very bad. Such a shame as the location and view of the Common are so good.We received a reduction when we complained.

Bathroom poor. The large high ceilinged dining room was very noisy due to wooden floor and no soft furnishings, A large noisy family was arranged on tables surrounding us trapping us and ruining our breakfast when the room was large enough for them to have been seated further away.Overall breakfast was 2out of 5

It was nice to stay in a family run hotel, where the staff were so friendly and accommodating. The bed was very comfortable and the shower facilities good. Being a Listed Building, the Russell Hotel has plenty of character, though climbing the staircases with luggage can be arduous. Parking - Rating 4/5

Thank you for your care during our stay over the nights of 17/18 August. You are fortunate that you have a certain amount of off-street parking, whuch we were able to make use of for one night. I completely understand the problem with parking in a busy place like Tun-W. I suggest that Hoteliers such as yourself collaborate with the council in arranging for street parking permits which would give overnight permits valid for the period of stay and up to 10 a.m. only;most travellers will have moved on by then and it would remove a concern from your guests about moving their car by 8.00Ken Munday

at least I used the phone! - Rating 1/5

when I started booking a hotel I had known that I was going to arrive sometime late at night. Or Should I say early in the morning. 2:00 a.m. to be exact. So I booked at the Russel accordingly. I received a confirmation letter, stating that I am welcomed at the mentioned time in the arrival day. Amazingly when I arrived, I was told that all the rooms were booked, and the policy was always to check in at 2:00. Not to make the story long, I had to travel 30 miles away to find another hotel. Well, you can calculate the damage. However, they let me use the phone to call tens of hotels till I could find one.

Response

The guestmade a booking via internet to arrive on 2nd of July and check out 3rd July. So we had reserved a room for him on 2nd July. Unfortunately the guest came to check in on the night of 1st July at 2AM. If he was planning to check in 2AM on the night of 1st July it was necessary for him to make the booking to arrive on the 1st July and not 2nd.As it happens we were fully booked and we could not give him a room. Sadly we were given wrong information. Whatever was the case, it was hugely stressful and inconvenient for the guest. The best we could do for him was to give him telephone so he could make few calls to find a room at middle of the night. It was not easy since most hotels appeared to be fully booked in Tunbridge Wells on that night. At the end we were glad he found a room from our help! The Russell Hotel.

The Russell Hotel was a good base for us to travel around. The hotel rooms were large, the decor was a little old and shabby but more than comfortable. The breakfast was more than enough, infact the portions were very large indeed! As a constructive critisism, maybe cut down the quantity of b/fast and save the money to renovate the rooms. We went to London after The Russell and the b/fast there was half the size and selection! The BEST of all was the staff. friendly, informative and efficient. I cannot praise them more. The Russell Hotel June 2011 - Rating 4/5

Do not be put off by the external appearance of the hotel. Although areas of the hotel are looking 'tired' there has been recent investment in the reception area and dining room. Tired bar are and bedrooms are more than made up for by the quality of the laundry both beds and towels but more particularly by the attention of the staff both day and night reception/porter but more particularly the efficency and courtesy of the dining room and kitchen staff which could not be faulted. The breakfasts were well cooked and very presentable. Value for money - definately at £32 per night/per person including breakfast for a triple room

why I probably won't return - Rating 1/5

we chose the Russell as it was close to my mother's house. Our room was large and clean and the beds comfortable. Breakfast was good.there are several reasons though why I would not return1.there was nowhere to park. We had a very small car and usually there was no space in the tiny carpark behind the hotel.I'm quite good at getting a car into a small space but usually there was nowhere --- made worse by the factthat it looked like the hotel was renting out carpark space to contractors to park their vans. We had to park far away and walk,2. the wonderful girl in the dining room was the only employee who ever smiled or made you feel welcome. All the others were dour.We left a day early.3.most of the time oou internet didn't work iin our room. I had to go to sit in reception to get a constant signal that didn't keep shutting off.4. it was too hard to carry cases up all the stairs and there was noone who offered to help.

Response

We appreciate all feedback. Thank you to our guests. We feel some points in this comment needs responding to.CAR PARK:We do not hire our car park out for the general public, at the time the guest visit we were very busy. Yes we have a smaller car park than we would like but it is manageable and it is not easy to get a large parking space in the heart of the town centre.INTERNET:We have internet in some rooms however not all, but we do have an internet connection in the public area. If possible we provide rooms with internet upon request.WILL HELP:We have an old building and don’t have a lift. Being a 2 star we don’t offer to carry guest bags to the rooms however if guests need help we are always willing to assist.Thank youThe Russell Hotel

An Enjoyable Stay - Rating 5/5

We really enjoyed our stay at The Russell Hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful. It was good to have a large room as this was our final two nights before flying home and we had lots of sorting to do as we repacked our bags. This was a good central point for lots of sightseeing and of course we were able to go to the ukulele concert. Parking for the car and free wireless made this a great place to stay. Thanks for two great days.

weekend in TW - Rating 4/5

I had a very pleasant stay. The staff were very friendly and very helpful.Breakfast was plentiful, freshly prepared and hot !!My room was basic, but adequate, however, would recommend that more milk be supplied with complimentary tea and coffee.
